This workshop is the first part of a three-part seasonal workshop series. The workshops will be held over three weekends during the growing season, with each workshop having a unique program and focusing on different permaculture design themes.

In this 4-hour hands-on workshop, agroecologist and permaculture designer Joshua Finch will show us how to apply simple ecological principles in creating and maintaining a garden.

Joshua Finch is a certified permaculture designer with over twelve years of hands-on experience and in-depth study. From 2016 to 2021 he built one of the first agroecological farms in Finland as an experimental space for teaching and testing regenerative practices.

We’ll learn the basics of permaculture design principles and how to read the landscape with regards to water, access, soil health, and other essential features of mainframe permaculture design.

Joshua will show us how to support ecosystem processes, support soil health, and increase diversity. We will also cover topics like how to care for perennials, how to build a garden of useful plants, seasonal pests, and how to make the most of your space.

The first workshop will focus on the spring and setting up your garden for success. We will learn hands-on techniques such as:

• Taking care of the basic soil health principles, like mulching bare ground
• Stimulating plant growth through pruning
• Fixing issues related to water & access
• Increasing plant diversity though diverse cover crops

The workshop will be held at Syötävä Puisto (Edible Park) on the beautiful island of Mustikkamaa. Syötävä Puisto is a community urban farm, just 5km from Helsinki city centre.
