Kääntöpöyta (Dodo ry)

Did you know that today, one third of the food produced for our consumption is wasted. It is being fed to bins. Saving 25% of this, would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people in the world, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

World Disco Soup Day was born as an event by Slow Food Youth Network to raise awareness on food waste problems, as well as current climate crisis. This year if the 6th edition and it has become a global initiative through Slow Food network!

The actual Disco Soup Day is the last Saturday of April every year. People gather outside, play music and make soup with ingredients that would be discarded otherwise.

In Helsinki, seasons turns… a little bit slower, hence our Soup Disco will be “Belated” by a month. We are organising our first ever Soup Disco Day in collaboration with Dodo ry !

Dodo is a Finnish environmental NGO. They have range of activities and events on regular basis and provide a great community space to stay aware of issues and connect to likely minded people. They have an urban gardening and event space in Kääntöpöytä  (turntable) outside Pasila station and organises “urban dinner”, where we get together and cook with expiring food saves from nearby supermarkets.

The event is organised as part of Dodo’s Use it all -waste food tour, which is supported by the Finnish food authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The aim of the project is to stimulate a new kind of debate on reducing food waste and to reach new target groups through the debate. The project will organise an event tour in 2021 and 2022 and will visit startups, restaurants, NGOs and educational institutions, among others. Events are held in Turku, Helsinki, Tampere and Oulu.

We wanted people in each other’s community to meet, connect and work together to address environment and climate related issues! Join us to cook, play music, dance, learn about Slow Food and Dodo’s activities and find each other.
